Salmon Evolution is the largest land based aquaculture operator in the world. Clarify and Salmon Evolution have collaborated since 2022 to make OT and sensor data available to optimise conditions for both the fish and the technical operation of the facility at Indre Harøy.

Salmon Evolution is a pioneer in land based fish farming and an innovator in utilising their hybrid flow-through system to farm salmon on land, at commercial scale, globally. Their technology minimises the operational and biological risk as well as ensuring control and optimal growth conditions for the fish, every time.

Phase 1 is in full production, while building is ongoing to triple production capacity at the Indre Harøy location

Innovating with data  - since 2022

Our collaboration started out early 2022, when Salmon Evolution decided to run a pilot with Clarify on a small subset of their data and facility. Gaining confidence in the product and the Clarify team by testing it in practice with real world data was the key to ultimately scale to the whole production.

More control = more to control

Every 4 hours fresh new seawater is introduced into the facility, while 65% is reused to optimise for water quality and energy usage while balancing costs and operational risk. All intake water is filtered and treated in order to minimise the risk of parasites, sea lice, viruses, and particles.

Water quality and operational systems are continuously monitored and controlled to ensure optimal performance at all times. In addition, every tank is a single biosecure space to increase the biological security and reduce the complexity of operating the facility as a whole.

The facility deploys state of the art industrial control systems to ensure optimal production. But with more control and hardware, the need for maintenance, improving control loops, avoiding down time, controlling energy usage, and so on, are new challenges that come on top of ensuring the best conditions for fish growth and welfare.

Utilising data and collaborating efficiently across functional teams is a key focus for Salmon Evolution. Live, high quality data is the common thread that brings teams together to find problems to solve, areas to improve, and innovating to find new and better ways of operating.

Making data valuable with Clarify

Step 1 - Take control and ownership of your operational data

Clarify helps Salmon Evolution take control and gain complete ownership of their OT data across underlying systems, to increase the speed and quality of decision making and action taking.

Step 2 - Enrich raw sensor data with human insight and build high quality data products

In addition, Clarify has interfaces for visualising, exploring, and building data products that combine raw data with domain expertise. In this way, raw data is given context, meaning, and value by the people who know the fish, the facility, and the process the best. This gives Salmon Evolution a data advantage for human decision making, automating workflows, and for training AI.

Step 3 - Make high quality data flow faster from producers to consumers

Ultimately, Clarify offers infrastructure, API's, and SDK's that make data flow to wherever Salmon Evolution wants to use their data, both internally and externally. With Clarify as a hosted and managed solution, the team at Salmon Evolution can focus on their core business, producing high quality food with minimal footprint to nature, without the hassle, costs, and complexity of managing mission critical data infrastructure.
